Information
About this Cloud Hub Solution:
The Earth's gravitational field is not uniform, and the geoid is the shape the ocean surface would take if only gravity and the Earth's rotation were considered. The geoid height is the difference between an ideal reference ellipsoid and the geoid, and the gravity anomaly is the difference between the acceleration due to gravity on the Earth's surface and the value calculated assuming the reference ellipsoid. The official Earth Gravitational Model EGM2008 was developed by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and released to the public.
Potential applications
The Gravity API has numerous potential applications across various fields, including:
- Geodesy and Surveying: Precise determination of geoid heights, which is crucial for accurate GPS positioning.
- Satellite Orbits and Navigation: Improved accuracy in predicting satellite orbits and positioning.
- Climate and Oceanography: Enhanced understanding of ocean circulation patterns and sea level variations.
- Resource Exploration: Accurate gravity field information to support mineral and hydrocarbon exploration.
- Global Positioning and Mapping: Improved accuracy of global positioning systems (GPS) for navigation and mapping applications.
- Academic and Research Applications: Support for academic research in fields like geophysics, geodesy, and atmospheric sciences.
The Gravity API provides on-demand access to the EGM2008 model, allowing users to tap into the power of this comprehensive gravitational model. To use the API, requests must contain a valid "API-Key" in the header, as demonstrated in the provided code samples.
