Microservices pay off when specific domains need independent scaling, deployment, or ownership — and cost you everywhere else. This sprint decomposes selected domains of an existing monolith into separate services, using the strangler fig pattern Scrums.com applies across its modernization work: new services run alongside the monolith, traffic shifts gradually, and nothing cuts over until it is validated.

Each extracted service ships with explicit contracts, its own data ownership, a deployment pipeline, and monitoring. The finish state: the agreed domains running as independently deployable services in production, the monolith's footprint reduced, and routing in place for everything that stays.

Do you migrate the whole monolith?

No. The sprint extracts the agreed domains only. Whole-estate decomposition is rarely the right goal; further domains can be extracted as follow-on items once the first set proves out.

What are the prerequisites?

A monolith in production, CI in place, and enough observability to validate traffic shifts. If monitoring is thin, the Observability Foundation Sprint on this menu is the natural first step.

Who runs the new services afterwards?

Your teams do. Operational ownership is part of the deliverable: each service is handed over with its pipeline, dashboards, alerts, and runbook, plus a walkthrough with the owning team.
