How this operator works

every way of working, already decided
A · capability focus

Owns the system, not the ticket

Takes end-to-end ownership of a service or surface. Design, delivery, on-call. And is measured on outcomes, not hours.

B · ways of working

Embedded, async-first, instrumented

Works inside your repos, your CI and your rituals. Daily written standups, decisions logged. No status-meeting tax.

C · reliability posture

Runbooks, canaries, reversible deploys

Every change gated and reversible. Incidents get a timeline and a postmortem; nothing ships without a rollback.

D · comms & cadence

Plugged into your Slack & rituals

Joins standups and retros, reports weekly against the goal. You get an operator, not a queue.

E · tooling

Brings a pre-wired stack or adopts yours

Infrastructure and observability as code by default. No bespoke setup tax to absorb.

F · onboarding

Scoped, gated, reversible

Week-1 shadow, week-2 ownership, swap on request inside the trial window. No long-tail handover risk.

Overview

Applications end up needing rescue the same few ways: the agency disappeared, the developer left with the knowledge, or accumulated neglect crossed the line into weekly outages. The Critical Application Rescue is the structured response — regain control of code, credentials, and infrastructure; stop the bleeding in order of business impact; and replace mystery with a documented, monitored system. Scrums.com starts rescue onboarding at checkout and has code live in production in 48 hours, prioritized for genuinely critical situations.

The approach is deliberately anti-heroic: assessment before surgery, the riskiest failure modes addressed first, and no big-bang rewrite sold under pressure — echoing the phased discipline of Scrums.com's modernization practice. The finish state: the application running reliably, deployable on demand, monitored, credentialed under your control, with a prioritized roadmap distinguishing what must happen next from what merely could.

·

What's included

Rapid Assessment & Control

Recovery of source, credentials, environments, and deploy capability into your ownership, plus a fast audit of failure modes, risks, and undocumented dependencies.

Stabilization Fixes

The defects and failure modes causing outages and data risk fixed in impact order — with a working, repeatable deployment path restored early, since rescue without deployability is diagnosis.

Operational Baseline

Monitoring, alerting, error tracking, and backups established — so the application's health is visible and regressions announce themselves.

Prioritized Recovery Roadmap

An evidence-based plan from the assessment: what is now stable, what remains fragile, and the sequenced next steps with effort and risk stated honestly.

·

How it works

  1. Scope — Emergency triage: current failures, access status, and business priorities; fix the stabilization order.
  2. Build — Regain control, restore deployability, and work the stabilization list with monitoring landing as fixes do.
  3. Handover — Stable operation demonstrated, documentation and runbooks delivered, and the recovery roadmap walked through with your team.

Part of every Delivery Plan

The Critical Application Rescue is a menu item on the Scrums.com delivery catalog, available at every plan tier. Add it to your plan backlog and your delivery team schedules it like any other item — scoped, tracked, and reported through the SEOP. See Delivery Plan Tiers.

FAQs

We have no documentation and no access to the original developers — is that workable?

It is the normal starting condition for rescue. The assessment reconstructs understanding from the code, infrastructure, and data — and the documentation that did not exist before is a deliverable of the sprint.

Rescue or rewrite?

Rescue first, almost always: stabilization is faster, cheaper, and reversible, and it buys the calm in which a rewrite decision can be made on evidence. The roadmap states plainly if replacement is the right call, and the Modernization Roadmap Sprint takes it from there.

Who keeps it healthy afterwards?

Either your team, equipped with the runbooks — or the Application Maintenance Takeover, the managed continuation designed to follow rescue directly.
