Senior AI Transformation Software Engineer

JohannesburgIndependent Contractor AgreementSeniorHybrid

Scrums.com is looking for a Software Engineer, AI Transformation to help shape their client's next-generation corporate governance platform, built on Scrums.com's Company-as-Code framework: running an organisation's governance operations as a versioned, observable code repository instead of scattered documents and institutional memory.
Own the technical build across a two-phase engagement: laying the foundation and the first five governance modules, then extending the same pattern across the client's remaining governance domains.
Work embedded directly alongside senior client stakeholders and the client's governance team, with genuine ownership over architecture and delivery, not just execution.
A rare opportunity to combine infrastructure-as-code discipline with hands-on LLM application development, building an agentic drafting and compliance system from the ground up.

Responsibilities

  • Instantiate a Company-as-Code repository structure for the governance domain on GitHub, covering entities, schemas, playbooks, agents, events, and policies
  • Model the client's core legal entities as typed schema objects within the repository
  • Set up CI validation and drift-gate checks so the repository remains the enforced source of truth
  • Map the client's existing document store into the new repository structure without disrupting day to day workflows
  • Convert governance standard operating procedures into structured, versioned playbooks
  • Build the agentic layer, including a drafting studio agent with an import, draft, cross-check, and finalise flow, a human sign-off gate, an event ledger, and a chat assistant grounded on synced documents
  • Deliver early quick wins such as automated governance calendar reminders, a digital signature pilot, and an automated trigger for a key recurring governance event
  • Configure role-based access control so different teams see only what is relevant to them
  • Build and maintain a client-facing portal covering a dashboard, drafting studio, results and Q&A, and chat interface
  • Extend the same governance-as-code pattern to additional governance domains as the engagement progresses

Experience and education

  • Strong TypeScript and Node.js experience, comfortable owning a codebase end to end rather than just contributing to one
  • Experience building repository-driven or infrastructure-as-code style systems, including CI/CD setup (GitHub Actions or equivalent)
  • Hands-on experience building with LLM APIs (Claude or equivalent), including prompt design, grounding or retrieval against a document store, and agent orchestration
  • API integration experience, including OAuth flows and REST APIs, ideally including Google Workspace APIs and enterprise SaaS platforms
  • Structured data modelling experience, comfortable authoring and validating JSON Schemas
  • Frontend web development experience (React or similar) to a professional, client-facing standard
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to explain technical decisions clearly to non-technical stakeholders
  • Comfortable working directly with senior stakeholders and embedded inside a client's team rather than at arm's length
  • Nice to have: experience with board or governance portal software, exposure to corporate governance or legal-tech domains, and familiarity with multi-jurisdiction regulatory contexts
