to your stack & domain
Design and implement a versioned production REST API for a defined domain or product capability. Finish state: a documented, secured, versioned API serving real clients.
How this operator works
every way of working, already decidedOwns the system, not the ticket
Takes end-to-end ownership of a service or surface. Design, delivery, on-call. And is measured on outcomes, not hours.
Embedded, async-first, instrumented
Works inside your repos, your CI and your rituals. Daily written standups, decisions logged. No status-meeting tax.
Runbooks, canaries, reversible deploys
Every change gated and reversible. Incidents get a timeline and a postmortem; nothing ships without a rollback.
Plugged into your Slack & rituals
Joins standups and retros, reports weekly against the goal. You get an operator, not a queue.
Brings a pre-wired stack or adopts yours
Infrastructure and observability as code by default. No bespoke setup tax to absorb.
Scoped, gated, reversible
Week-1 shadow, week-2 ownership, swap on request inside the trial window. No long-tail handover risk.
Overview
The REST API Design & Build delivers a production REST API for one defined domain — orders, bookings, accounts, content, whatever capability your product needs to expose. Design comes first: a reviewed OpenAPI contract fixes resources, verbs, status codes, pagination, and error shapes before implementation starts. The finish state is the API deployed, versioned, secured, documented, and consumed by at least one real client.
Scrums.com ships APIs and complex integrations across 400+ client companies, in the stacks your team already runs — Node.js, Python, .NET, Go. The sprint applies that experience so the API you get is boring in the best way: predictable conventions, consistent errors, and a contract clients can build against without asking questions.
What's included
API Design & OpenAPI Contract
Resource modeling, endpoint design, pagination, filtering, and error conventions — captured as an OpenAPI specification and reviewed with your team before code.
Implementation & Persistence
The API implemented in your stack against your data layer, with validation, idempotent writes where they matter, and clean separation from internal business logic.
Security & Versioning
Authentication and authorization (API keys, OAuth2/JWT, or your existing identity layer), rate limiting hooks, and an explicit versioning strategy so future change does not break clients.
Documentation & Test Suite
Generated reference documentation from the OpenAPI spec, worked request examples, and an automated contract and integration test suite wired into CI.
How it works
- Scope — Fix the domain boundary, the OpenAPI contract, the auth model, and the first consuming client.
- Build — Implement, test, and document the API; validate it against the contract and the first client's real usage.
- Handover — Production deployment, CI-integrated tests, docs, and a versioning playbook handed to your team.
Part of every Delivery Plan
The REST API Design & Build is a menu item on the Scrums.com delivery catalog, available at every plan tier. Add it to your plan backlog and your delivery team schedules it like any other item — scoped, tracked, and reported through the SEOP. See Delivery Plan Tiers.
FAQs
How big can the API be within one sprint item?
One domain, typically up to a dozen resource types. A sprawling multi-domain surface is split into multiple items — the contract step makes the boundary explicit before committing.
REST or GraphQL — how do we choose?
REST fits resource-shaped domains and broad client compatibility; GraphQL fits flexible client-driven querying. If your access patterns point the other way, the GraphQL API Implementation is the sibling menu item.
What happens when we need to expose this externally?
The build's versioning and auth foundations are designed to survive that step. Turning it into a supported external product — developer onboarding, limits, docs portal — is the Public Developer API Launch item.
