Decompose selected domains of a monolith into independently deployable services with explicit contracts, operational ownership, and a controlled cutover.

How this operator works

every way of working, already decided
A · capability focus

Owns the system, not the ticket

Takes end-to-end ownership of a service or surface. Design, delivery, on-call. And is measured on outcomes, not hours.

B · ways of working

Embedded, async-first, instrumented

Works inside your repos, your CI and your rituals. Daily written standups, decisions logged. No status-meeting tax.

C · reliability posture

Runbooks, canaries, reversible deploys

Every change gated and reversible. Incidents get a timeline and a postmortem; nothing ships without a rollback.

D · comms & cadence

Plugged into your Slack & rituals

Joins standups and retros, reports weekly against the goal. You get an operator, not a queue.

E · tooling

Brings a pre-wired stack or adopts yours

Infrastructure and observability as code by default. No bespoke setup tax to absorb.

F · onboarding

Scoped, gated, reversible

Week-1 shadow, week-2 ownership, swap on request inside the trial window. No long-tail handover risk.

Overview

Microservices pay off when specific domains need independent scaling, deployment, or ownership — and cost you everywhere else. This sprint decomposes selected domains of an existing monolith into separate services, using the strangler fig pattern Scrums.com applies across its modernization work: new services run alongside the monolith, traffic shifts gradually, and nothing cuts over until it is validated.

Each extracted service ships with explicit contracts, its own data ownership, a deployment pipeline, and monitoring. The finish state: the agreed domains running as independently deployable services in production, the monolith's footprint reduced, and routing in place for everything that stays.

·

What's included

Service boundary selection

Not every domain earns extraction. We rank candidates by the value of independent scaling, deployment, and ownership, and agree the set worth the operational cost.

Strangler-fig extraction

New services run alongside the monolith behind a routing facade. Traffic shifts gradually, and nothing cuts over until it is validated against real load.

Contract & data migration

Each service gets explicit API contracts and its own data ownership, with migration and reconciliation for the data it takes with it.

Operational readiness

Every extracted service ships with its own pipeline, monitoring, alerts, and runbook — deployable and on-call-ready before cutover.

·

How it works

  1. Scope. Select the domains that justify extraction and define their service contracts.
  2. Build. Extract services behind the strangler facade, migrate data ownership, and shift traffic in stages.
  3. Handover. Production cutover, then runbooks, dashboards, and pipelines handed to the owning teams.

FAQs

Do you migrate the whole monolith?

No. The sprint extracts the agreed domains only. Whole-estate decomposition is rarely the right goal; further domains can be extracted as follow-on items once the first set proves out.

What are the prerequisites?

A monolith in production, CI in place, and enough observability to validate traffic shifts. If monitoring is thin, the Observability Foundation Sprint on this menu is the natural first step.

Who runs the new services afterwards?

Your teams do. Operational ownership is part of the deliverable: each service is handed over with its pipeline, dashboards, alerts, and runbook, plus a walkthrough with the owning team.
