The finish state is the application running on a supported runtime with a repeatable path for whatever scope remains.

The approach de-risks the rewrite: portability analysis first, then staged migration, upgrading projects incrementally, replacing framework-only dependencies, and applying strangler-fig patterns where components need rebuilding rather than porting. Our application is large. Does everything migrate in one sprint?

A scoped slice does; the assessment sizes the whole. Each sprint delivers a releasable increment, and the residual map shows exactly what remains, so progress is real rather than deferred.

What about WebForms or WCF components?

The parts with no direct modern equivalent are the strangler-fig candidates: replaced incrementally behind stable interfaces. The assessment identifies them and prices the options honestly.
